Let's be honest- Gumby's Pizza is good.  It isn't amazing.  But it is better than a lot of the other chain pizza restaurants around Tallahassee (and it is a chain, if only a small one, located in many small college towns across America).

But, you know what isn't good and is amazing? Pokey Sticks.  These bread sticks covered in herbs, oils, and just a little bit of cheese are divine and are complimented so well by the thin ranch dressing that accompanies them on the side.   Gumby's is the place that introduced me to pizza and ranch dressing (and we wonder why Americans have an obesity problem).  But it is fantastic.

I remember the first time I heard someone suggest ranch dressing as a dipping sauce.  I was a Freshman at FSU and on an Alternative Break Spring Break trip to New York City with a bunch of FSU students.  We were there to volunteer and perform community service over spring break.  It was a great trip- but we stopped in to one of the famous NYC pizza slice shops and one of the girls asked for ranch dressing for her pizza.   The whole store thought she was insane.    I learned from her that this was a common sauce at Gumby's - and because of that, all over Tallahassee.   I would come home and give it a try and realize that I was wrong.  Ranch dressing is better on pizza than salad!

Last month I was back in Tallahassee for work and someone brought pokey sticks to the office (also in town short term for work and trying to re-live their college days) and I realized they are a treasure that this city provides its people.

Now, I'm back in Tallahassee for the foreseeable future.  I have already been by Gumby's for some pokey sticks- and I am sure I will be by again and again over the next few months.

I wondered here after having too many drinks at the bars across the street. I haven't been to a gumbys pizza since my college days but its still the same. I was surprised that it was still open that late in the evening. I ordered one slice of cheese pizza but it took a lot longer than expected. There seemed to be only one person working with a decent amount of post bar hopping folks. After about 15 minutes I finally got the best late night post bar cheese pizza. It was hot and cheesy and hit the spot. Plus because I waited so long it was on the house which I appreciated. I still gave a tip equal to the cost of the pizza. Anyway, this is the best food to have after a long night of bar hopping. If you're ever in the neighborhood I suggest you grab a box. Its very much part of the community and has a lot of food options beyond pizza.

I am typically pleased with Gumby's gluten free pizza.  However, this time, I opened the box and it looked exactly like the pic.  It was soggy, in pieces, and the toppings stuck to the lid and fell off.  The wings I ordered were also sub-par because they were underdone and greasy, not crispy. I ordered through BiteSquad, and sent them the pic, and they also didn't really think anything was wrong, but finally granted me a refund.  So an hour and a half later, I am left with having to start from scratch on finding lunch.  Grrr...

I ordered a late night delivery online. The hour wait wasn't that bad with it being the weekend. I ordered a medium cheese pizza with bacon, pepperoni, parmesan cheese and spinach toppings with a garlic crust. If the crust was garlic I couldn't taste it. I also asked for a side of pizza sauce and received a side of ranch. Besides the order errors the pizza tasted great. The pizza was hot and fresh upon delivery. I enjoyed it so much it made it hard not to finish the entire medium pizza myself. I could do without the large chunks of onion I'm assuming comes in their pizza sauce but overall a good quality pizza. The menu is definitely reasonably priced. I would patronize this business again.

I love Gumby's and Pokey Stix and have for years but they don't know what they are doing and it takes an hour
